Bringing The Trail To Kia. Her First Walk (part 1)
Remember I said when Kia was transported from CA to WA that she was tagged NPOTG? Again that means No Paws On The Ground due to the fact that she has not completed her vaccines and so she should not be walking around in public places where she could contract Parvo or some other yucky stuff that would be really dangerous to her. The thing I didn't realize is that meant even our hiking trails were a no-no and you all know how much we love to get our foster dogs out right away to experience walking in the woods.
So we have been trying everything to keep her busy, enriched, and burn her puppy energy down here at home but in just a few days we were longing to get her out of the yard and into the big world. Her spay is this week and she will get her next vaccines so after 3 days we will be able to safely take her out and she can put her paws on the ground, but in the meantime we had the idea that we could take her for her first walk in the big part of our yard where she doesn't get to explore on her own due to us worrying she could find a small place to squeeze through somewhere. So I found a small harness that fit her, and Dave grabbed the long line and off we went! It didn't matter to her it was just a bigger part of the yard. Kia had not been out of the front yard so to her she WAS in the big world and she had a blast!
Let's go!
Kia was all over with the long line, checking out stuff then back to us, then back out. Clearly her curiosity was piqued!
Hi foster mom and dad, can you find me?
In the back yard. We have been naturalizing a large part of our yard and even took out a lot of lawn and put down animal friendly hog fuel, about 30 yards of it.
Kia would stop and look at us every now and then, it was super cute.
Liza was really into this walk in the yard, so it was nice for Kia to have our scout dog to show her where all the good places are.
This is so funny, the first time we got the leash on and she was bucking and broncoing. She has a lot of confidence so we weren't worried about it, we knew she would figure it out in no time flat.
We have been working a lot on eye contact so she is always stopping to give us eye contact to see if she gets a treat.
Yup she sure did!
Kia is super intense when she is working. For her this walk WAS working, she was learning all the sights, smells, and textures of the great outdoors. A great way for a little puppy to socialize to nature. (she had a little fir needle above her eye)
She is a compact little unit, she has a great physique!
Tim was having fun on this excursion too!
Love this photo of her
Checking out a branch, maybe a deer went by here, we have deer that come into our yard quite often. Look at that adorable tail nub!
Back in the area between our garage and house. We fenced this area off and took out all the plants and made it maintenance free. I LOVE the dragonfly that Dave made me one year for a gift.
Liza and Kia check out the dragonfly together.
There are a couple more posts coming from this adventure, so stayed tuned!
